Glasses can definitely be a fashion statement, and some people actually look better in them than without. Regardless, you should always have more than one pair. When choosing eye glasses, it’s a good idea to take someone, who is objective, with you.

Three Things to Consider

There are basically three things you should consider when choosing eye glasses:

Fashion - the size and design of the frame. What the frame is made of. The color of the lens, if any. The Coastal Grandmother is classic so, in keeping with that, I would recommend not going with too high fashion or trendy.

Shape - you will want to consider your facial contours and features for determining the shape of the frame. The style of the frame should be available in different sizes - the size of your face will determine the size of the frame. If the size of the frame is too large, it will appear to be wearing you. If the frame is too small, it will throw off the whole balance of your face.

Lifestyle - you should consider your lifestyle when selecting eye wear. Knowing your personal style will help here. A Classic Dramatic will choose differently than a Classic Sporty Natural. If you are a Sporty/Natural. and you spend time on the weekend hiking or rock climbing, naturally you will choose frames that are sturdy and resilient. A Classic Romantic might choose a frame that is delicate etc. You do not want to economize on your eye glasses. Yes, glasses are an accessory, but if you wear them most of the time, it is equivalent to a permanent feature.

You can choose rimless, plastic frames or metal frames. The frame should be as wide as the widest part of your face. Your eye should be in the center of the frame or lens (if rimless). If you choose metal frames, the metal should equate to your season i.e. silver for Summer and Winter and gold for Spring and Autumn. If you choose plastic frames, they should complement your hair color. Winter is the only season who can wear black, and even then, it will be dramatic. A better choice might be charcoal, charcoal- brown or gray if the hair is gray. Summers wear most shades of grey, gray- blue, and rose-brown well. Springs wear medium to light warm golden-browns and light gray when the hair is gray. Autumns can wear warm browns to red-browns ( tortoise shell) and grayed-brown or light gray with gray hair.

Is face Shape Important

Your face shape is probably the most important factor in choosing your eyewear. As a general rule, you want to go opposite your face shape with the frame of your eye glasses i.e. if your face is round, you would want to go angular, and if your face is angular, you would want to go softer or rounder.

Face Shapes:

Oval face shape - This face shape has perfect symmetry and can wear most any shape frame. There are not many true oval face shapes. A rectangle frame or “cat eye”(slight upturn on the top corner) frame can be stunning.

Square face shape - This face shape has a broad forehead and strong jawline. Since this face shape is angular, it is best to choose frames that soften the features and elongate the face. A round or oval shape works well on this face shape.

Round face shape - This face shape is full all the way around or “moon” shape. You will be flattered by choosing a more angular style like rectangular or squared, the more narrow, the better. Aviator style can also work well. Just avoid round or oversized frames.

Oblong face shape - This face shape is longer than it is wide with thin, long and straight cheek bones. This is where a contrast feature works best. A wide aviator or squared frame works well. Definitely avoid narrow or rectangular.

Diamond face shape - This face shape is narrow in the forehead, wide at the cheek line and narrow again at the chin. Using prominent brow line frames works best. Semi rimless frames and curvy cat eye frames work well also. Avoid narrow frames.

Heart face shape - This face shape has a broad forehead, wide cheek bones and a narrow chin. Oval frames, as well as “cat eyes” work well. Rimless frames are another good choice. Avoid aviator frames or frames with dominant brow features.

Sunglasses

This is where you can have fun and be trendy! The one thing I do not recommend is combining your regular glasses and your sunglasses by using photo-sensitive lenses. Although they have improved these type lenses significantly, they often do not darken enough for strong, outdoor sunlight or lighten enough for inside. And, remember, your eyes are the windows of your soul so you want people to see them when you are trying to establish rapport.

Note: I do recommend good Polaroid sunglasses. It is important to protect your eyes in bright sunlight. I have worn Maui Jims for the last ten years or so. They are expensive, but their customer service is excellent. If you break or crack a lens (which I have), you can send them back to Maui Jim, and they will replace the lens for a nominal cost.
