Preppy Blazers
So what’s in for Fall/Winter, and how can you incorporate the latest fashion trends into your own wardrobe? Well, you are going to be surprised and happy to learn that you won’t need to add much! The good news is you probably already have a lot of the trends in your closet! Like denim, everything in the “jean” family is in this year. Good news, right? Another big fashion trend is boho so, if you are a former “flower child”, you are going to LOVE all the latest boho trends.

Another big trend is “preppy”, so if you are a Classic Sporty/Natural, or even a Classic Traditional, you will love the plaid blazers, chunky loafers and leather belts. My daughter is a Classic Traditional with a Sporty/Natural flair, so she is delighted! I, on the other hand, do not have a preppy bone in my body. Being a Classic Dramatic, it is about as far apart as you can get. This is why I preach, build your wardrobe around the neutrals for your Season, and add trends in small amounts! The Ralph Lauren blazer below is my only nod toward preppy, and as you can see, it is more “Classic Dramatic” on me. Black and white is dramatic all on it’s own and it is a staple neutral for “Winters”.

Even though I bought this blazer at the Ralph Lauren outlet in Nags Head, and it was on sale, it was still pricey. I didn’t hesitate because I understand “price per wearing”. If you are not familiar with that term, let me explain. If you pay $120.00 for a pair of designer jeans that you wear three days out of seven, here is how the math works: $120 divided by 3 = $40 per week per wearing divided by 4 (1 month) = $10 per wearing per month divided by 12 (months in a year). = $.80 per wearing per year! You would gladly pay 80 cents per wearing per year for your favorite jeans right? Conversely, if you paid $120.00 for a dress to wear to a wedding, and you only wore it the one time in a year, your cost per wearing would be $120.00! I wore this blazer with white jeans twice in September (when I bought it), and have already worn it three time in October, so my cost per wearing is looking pretty good! That’s why a sound investment is putting the bulk of your wardrobe money into your Season’s neutrals, in good fabrics, that you will wear over and over again!
Another trend for Fall/Winter will be burgundy accessories. This is a “carry over” from Spring/Summer, so it looks like it will be around for awhile. I did buy a pair of burgundy patent and leather heels at TJ Maxx yesterday. I rarely wear heels, but another trend for Fall/Winter is a kitten, chunkier heel. This works well for us Coastal Grandmothers as they are sturdier and more comfortable. I don’t spend much money on trends period, but these shoes look great with jeans, dress pants or dresses, so my cost per wearing is going to be great! The other thing I bought is a pair of jeweled pewter flats which are strictly for fun. Since they are pewter, they are a good neutral for “Winters”, and I can see wearing them with almost any outfit. They were not expensive, and when they go out of style, if they are still in good shape, I will just donate them.

Another trend, and apparently a big one, for this Fall/Winter is “butter yellow”, yep, butter yellow! I will tell you now, I haven’t bought anything in this color, and probably will not. I think it would be fabulous on a “Spring” season, and even though most seasons could get away with it, I personally don’t think it will stay around long.

Shoes and boots for Fall/Winter will be chunky soles or cute, wider kitten heels. The boots vary from ankle to over the knee, it’s just the heels that dictate the “in” look. Again, as with Spring/Summer, flats and Mary Jane’s are going to be the look. The difference will be, there will be lots of jewels and bling!
Shoes, and even boots, are being shown in animal prints. My advice here would be, watch your cost per wearing!
